Consider everything you’ve done in your life. Do you want the book to be about your entire life or just certain aspects? If it’s going to be on your whole life, then it’s a good idea to talk to your parents and grandparents. Get some background information that you may not remember. Children often have rosy pictures of the younger years and need their parents to tell them what it was really like. You want the book to be truthful and accurate, not a whitewashed version. If you are only writing about important events or certain times in your life, then your own memories should suffice. Just try to be honest about everything. It’s going to be tough writing about your mistakes and struggles, but the book will be much more personable if you tell the unvarnished truth.
Write an introduction. Let people know a little about you right off the bat. Explain why they should read a book on your life. What will it offer them? How will they relate? Make them want to continue reading your book.
Laugh at yourself. Keep your sense of humor when writing the book on your life. If we can laugh at ourselves, then most everything will be OK. Make the book funny and interesting, and people will keep the pages turning. Even serious subjects can have a lighthearted undertone. You don't want to make light of serious situations that others my have gone through, but you can insert witty anecdotes and observations about your personal battles or experiences.
Keep it real. Let the emotions you felt at the time show through. Don’t hold yourself back and make the book stale and boring. It’s much easier to read a book that actually makes you feel something.
Enjoy yourself. Most of all have fun writing the book. If you are having fun while doing it people will be able to tell. It’s your life, and it may have been hard, but you survived! Think about the triumphs and joys, important people in your life, and all the things that made it worthwhile. Writing a book about your life is the best way for others to get to know you.
