How to Write a Permission Statement in Your Book

There should be a permission statement in any copyrighted book, whether it's been purchased by a publisher or self-published. Located adjacent to the title page of the book, this statement usually includes basic information about the book, such as when it was published and by whom, as well as the requirements for reprinting any of the material. Often, smaller permission statements will appear on this page too, each according to the copyright requirements of authors you've cited in your book.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain written permission to use any materials in your book that require official statements to be made upon reprint. For example, song lyrics, a commonly cited copyrighted material, often require a statement to appear such as "Blank", by "The name of the book author," "year of publications", was reprinted with permission from "name of publisher" and any other information required by that particular publisher.

    • 2

Follow these statements on a page, adjacent to your title page, with a space, then the statement, "Copyright (followed by the copyright symbol and year) by your name.

    • 3

Skip a space and start your own permission statement, starting with "All rights reserved, including the right to reproduce in any form or length."

    • 4

Add any first or second reproduction requirements unique to your publication and make a statement that unauthorized reprint isn't allowed.

    • 5

Include the name and contact information of the publisher of your book, or your own name and address, if self-published. This will guide anyone who'd like to reprint your work in the future.
