Draft a book manuscript in Word. Keep the formatting simple and uniform so that it transfers to galley or eBook format with minimal effort. For example, use a single font, such as Courier New, Arial, or Times New Roman, justify all but the title page to the left, and avoid tables or text boxes.
Use the carriage return and Microsoft's ruler function at the top of the Word editing space to align paragraphs. Use one carriage return per indent. Avoid using spaces or tabs for new paragraphs.
Use the "Show/hide" button that looks like a backwards "P" to reveal your carriage returns, extra spaces, tabs or strange formatting. Remove the unnecessary returns, tabs, spaces, and formatting.
Print your manuscript as a hard copy on 8.5" x 11" white paper. Verify that formatting is constant between pages and that the font appears as you desire, such as bold and italics showing up where you typed them. Make adjustments in Word until the hard copy has the appearance you want.
Print your manuscript as a pdf file. This gives you an idea of what it will look like in galley format when you get it back from publisher. Make adjustments in Word until the pdf file has the appearance you want. You can find free converters online for this basic pdf function. Once this is done, your book is ready to submit to a publisher in electronic format for conversion into a galley or conversion into most eBook formats.
