Grants for Self-Published Authors

Becoming a published author might constitute a long and difficult process, and for some, self-publishing will be the best way for a new author to break into the scene. Some authors who self-publish their book become popular. However, it takes money to become a self-published author. You must pay for an ISBN, copyrights, printing and much more. With grants available you can receive funding and become a self-published author.
  1. United States Institute of Peace

    • Grants for peace are an option.

One way to obtain a grant is to apply for the Annual Grant Competition or Priority Grant Competition. You must have a proposal that advocates the cause of peace, however. For example, if you propose writing a book that suggests solutions to religious-based conflict, poetry about the role of women in peace efforts or fiction about the effects of war on the characters, then you could obtain a grant from this organization. If you are interested, you can apply online. You need to submit three letters of reference along with a proposal for your project. Grants are funded for one to two years and range from $50,000 to $120,000.

    Kickstarter Creative Funding

    • Another great way to bring your ambitions to life is to become a part of Kickstarter. At Kickstarter, you post a description of your proposed project and ask for a specific amount of money to fund it. After this people interested would offer their funds. However, the total amount you ask for must be met by the end date or you will not receive the fund. If you are interested, you can register with the site and submit a paragraph explaining what type of project you have planned and what funds you need.

    Xeric Foundation

    • Comic book writers can obtain grants too.

Grants from the Xeric Foundation go to people who want to publish a comic book. However, it is not their intention to fully fund the project. They recommend that you apply early. A distribution committee will review your proposal on a semiannual basis. Dates can be found on their website. Also, if you wish to apply you must write a grant proposal. This proposal must be submitted in the form of a written request and must include six copies.
