How to Cite Short Plays

If you're writing a paper for some professional or academic purpose, it's important to properly attribute and cite sources you use. Proper citation requires following the accepted standard. It makes the citation clearer and gives your work a more professional look. The Modern Language Association publishes citation standards for all manner of texts, such as journal articles, Internet sources, nonfiction books and theatrical works.

Instructions

    • 1

Write out the author's full name, starting with the last name. For example: Williams, Tennessee. Place a period after the name.

    • 2

State the name of the short play. Write it out in italics, and place a period at the end.

    • 3

Write the city of publication, followed by a colon. Then write the publisher, insert a comma, and state the year of publication, followed by a period. For example: Detroit: Printing Publishers, 2007.

    • 4

Write in-text citations of quoted or referenced short plays by stating the author's last name and the corresponding page or line numbers in parentheses. For example: Edwards (10)
