How to Cite Books for a Paper in Chicago Style

"Of making many books there is no end." Scholarship is serious business. Every book or paper written requires properly sourced and cited references. As a scholar or writer of papers, you want to produce a written work worthy of respect and acceptance in the scholastic world. The "Chicago Manual of Style" has explicit guidelines for the task of citing the books you use as sources in your scholarship.

      Use the following template when citing in Chicago style a book with one author: Last name, first name. Title. City: Publisher, year. For example, "Prissy, Mona. Let's Ride Giraffes! New York: Poltergeist Press, 2007."

      Use the following template when citing in Chicago style a book with two or more authors: Last name, first name, and first name last name. Title. City: Publisher, year. For example, "Dreams, Daniel, and Pharoh G. Pops. Down by the River. Lowville, MS: Bulrush & Sons, 1999."

      Use the following template when citing in Chicago style a book with an editor, translator or compiler and an author: Last name, first name. Title. Translated, compiled or edited by first name last name. City: Publisher, year. For example,"Tzu, Wim. Climbing Mount Everest in a Tutu. Translated by Edith Sweet. Chicago: Getit Books, 2011."

      Use the following template when citing in Chicago style a book with an editor, translator or compiler and not an author: Last name, first name, trans, ed., comp. Title. City: Publisher, year. For example, "Figs, Jerry, trans. The Nibelungenlied. Sultry, ID: Portuguese Press, 2000."
