How to Spell Words in Pig Latin

Foreign languages require months if not years of practice and exposure before you can expect to be fluent in them. Pig Latin is not a real language, but you also can learn to speak, write and even read it in a few minutes. Pig Latin depends on syllabic manipulation of a language in which you're already fluent, like English. As such, it is a physical coding of that language. Get started on your Pig Latin fluency.

Instructions

    • 1

Move an initial consonant to the end of the word and add the syllable "ay." For example, spell the word "pig" as "igpay."

    • 2

Move an initial consonant pair to the end of the word and add the syllable "ay." For example, spell the word "speak" as "eakspay."

    • 3

Leave an initial vowel unchanged and add the syllable "ay" to the end of the word. For example, spell the word "is" as "isay."

    • 4

Maintain initial capitalization of proper nouns like "Latin." For example, spell the word "Latin" as "Atinlay." Some users prefer maintaining original-letter capitalization, for example, "atinLay."
