How to Cite Photos of Celebrities in MLA Format

Few mediums surpass photography for evocation and impact. Open a book of Hungarian photographer André Kertész's Paris photographs and you've entered a city of desolation, beauty and silence, a Paris of the mind rather than a Paris of the world. Photographs, and celebrity photographs, can provide impact and evocation in your essay, paper or thesis too. When you're citing these photographs in your text and on your works cited page, you'll want to follow the guidelines of the Modern Language Association of America (MLA). The guidelines are clear and straight-forward.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the last name and first name of the photographer separated by a comma and followed by a period to begin a celebrity photograph citation for your works cited page. For example, write "Hecker, Adam."

    • 2

Write the title of the photograph followed by a period. For example, write "Hecker, Adam. Clark Gable and his 300SL Gullwing Roadster." Italicize the title of the photograph in an actual MLA citation.

    • 3

Write the date of the photograph followed by a period. For example, write "Hecker, Adam. Clark Gable and his 300SL Gullwing Roadster. 1955."

    • 4

Write the word "Photograph" followed by a period. For example, write "Hecker, Adam. Clark Gable and his 300SL Gullwing Roadster. 1955. Photograph."

    • 5

Write the name of the institution where the work is available. For example, write "Hecker, Adam. Clark Gable and his 300SL Gullwing Roadster. 1955. Photograph. Museum of Stars and Cars."

    • 6

Write the city and state of the museum's location separated by a comma and followed by a period. If the city is well known, like Chicago or Philadelphia, write only the city name and not the state. For example, write "Hecker, Adam. Clark Gable and his 300SL Gullwing Roadster. 1955. Photograph. Museum of Stars and Cars. Hideout, Utah."

    • 7

Write the photographer's last name in parentheses for an in-text citation of a celebrity photograph in MLA style. An example: "The 300SL Gullwing is as iconic as many of its owners (Hecker)."
