The first National Treasures were designated in Japan in 1897. The criteria for selection were:

1. Cultural and artistic value: Objects with important cultural and artistic significance, including works of art, historical artifacts, and documents

2. Historical significance: Objects that are associated with important events or figures in Japanese history

3. Rarity: Objects that are rare and unique in their nature or origin

4. International value: Objects that have significant cultural and artistic value on a global scale

The initial group of National Treasures included a wide variety of objects, such as ancient statues, swords, paintings, and lacquerware. The designation as a National Treasure provides these objects with legal protection and ensures their preservation for future generations.
