This project allows students to select their own subject and style for a free-form mosaic display plate. They can choose abstract shapes, flowers or any other desired image for their subject. After sketching their design on paper, they mix and roll out self-hardening red clay (about 1/4 inch thick) on a sheet of wax paper. Next they cut away the outline of their design with a clay knife, then use the blunt side of an orange wood stick to carve the lines of their sketch into the clay to mimic grout lines (being careful to go only 1/4 inch deep into the clay).
After the clay air dries for three days, paint the mosaic-style pieces in desired colors. Let dry for one day. Follow with a contrasting paint applied over the entire piece, then wipe the paint only from the surface to leave contrast in the faux grout lines.
Hand-painted tiles backed with an attached layer of cork will serve as a set of four decorative coasters when each student completes this art project. Using 4-inch-square earthenware ceramic tiles, paint any design or subject on the surface with Liquitex Glossies paint to produce a translucent appearance in the style of glazing paints. Tiles can be matching or coordinating patterns. Allow to dry overnight; finish with a clear acrylic spray to protect the paint.
Mismatched or thrift store dishes will become tissue and fiber display dishes and works of art. Each student applies torn pieces of solid-color or patterned tissue paper and cut string fiber to the surface of a clean, dry plate with Mod Podge. Materials can be applied in random or abstract patterns or to form a specific shape or image. After drying, students may paint the surfaces or leave them in raw form. Finish with a clear coat of acrylic spray to protect the artwork.
Votive candles are placed in decorated glasses for this activity. Students select new or recycled wrapping paper in a pattern and color scheme they enjoy. Apply torn pieces of the wrapping paper to the outer surface of a drinking glass with Mod Podge. Use an Exacto knife to trim materials just under the top rim of the glass. Finish with a clear spray of protective acrylic coating on the outside of the glass only and embellish with ribbon if desired.
