How to Make Acrylic Photo Sculptures

Acrylic photo sculptures are images mounted on 1/4-inch thick acrylic sheets and attached to a base. Photographers and printers may add this product to their photography services. To create your own photo sculpture, use 4-by-8-foot acrylic sheets. Most retailers will cut the sheets into smaller sizes, which makes them easier to handle. Practice on scrap images before working with originals.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the subject for the photo sculpture. The subject is the part of the photo to highlight, such as a person or group of people, or a vehicle, building or other object. The rest of the photo will not be part of the sculpture.

    • 2

Cut around the subject with scissors, leaving approximately 1 inch around the edges.

    • 3

Mount the photo on a piece of acrylic. Use a photo-mount adhesive and spray it directly on the acrylic, then place the photo on top. Make sure the area is clean from any debris such as dust or excess pieces of photo paper.

    • 4

Eliminate any air bubbles by using a rubber roller to smooth out the photo. Let dry for about 15 minutes.

    • 5

Wearing safety goggles, place the photo and acrylic face up. Using the scroll saw, cut around the border of the subject. Drill a hole in areas that are tight, such as between the arms and legs, then place the blade in the drilled hole to cut.

    • 6

Create the base by using a rectangular piece of acrylic. Secure with super glue.

    • 7

Sand down the edges to smooth.
