How to Oxy-fuel Weld

Oxy-fuel welding is one of the most common types of welding due to it's portability and affordability. Oxygen added to fuel makes the flame burn hotter and the welding easier and more effective. When talking about oxy-fuel, most people are usually referring to oxy-acetylene torches, but the term can also apply to oxy-propane, oxy-MAPP or other types of fuel. Only acetylene burns hot enough to weld steel. An oxy-fuel torch can also be used to cut, bend and braze metals.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on all safety equipment, including heat resistant gloves and a welding mask.

    • 2

Turn on the acetylene fuel at the tank, and then turn on the torch. Ignite your torch as instructed by the manufacturer. This is typically done by using an igniter. Open the oxygen valves. You will see the flame become tighter and develop a small bright blue flame inside the larger flame.

    • 3

Hold the torch so that the smaller flame heats the two pieces to be welded.

    • 4

Watch for pools of metal on both sides. Pull the molten metal from each side toward the other using the flame.

    • 5

Pull the melted metal down the weld line, waiting until the next area becomes molten before pulling these sides together. Continue until the entire weld is complete.
