How to Make a Flower Using 3D Studio Max

The three-dimensional (3D) design program 3ds Max is used by professional animators and designers to create films, games and other multimedia content. One set of tools within 3ds Max lets users craft two-dimensional representations of three dimensional objects—a process called "modeling." Using these modeling tools, you can create a large variety of real and imaginary objects, including people, flowers and other organic creations. Beginning modelers can begin creating flowers in 3ds Max by working with a basic two-dimensional shape.

Things You'll Need

  • Autodesk 3ds Max

Instructions

    • 1

Open 3ds Max and maximize the "Top" viewport by clicking on the "+" symbol in the window pane with the text "Top." Click "Maximize Viewport," then press "P" to enable a perspective view.

    • 2

Press the "Create" menu item, followed by the "Shapes" and "Rectangle" items within the "Create" heading. Click to the center-left of the design grid, then drag several squares to the right, then three or four squares up, to define a flower petal's rough outline.

    • 3

Click the "Graphite Modeling Tools" menu item, then click the text "Convert to Poly." Click the button that displays the three points, to begin editing the rectangle's vertices (AKA points).

    • 4

Click the upper-right vertex of the rectangle and ensure that it turns red, indicating you've selected it. Click the "y" arrow of the axes that have appeared, and push the vertex down until it's halfway to the vertex below it.

    • 5

Use step 4's instructions to move the rectangle's lower right vertex up toward the vertex you just moved, so that a point is nearly formed at the right end of the flower's first petal.

    • 6

Locate the button with the scissors icon, in the "Edit" group of the "Graphite Modeling Tools" menu. Click the scissors, then click the middle of the top edge of the rectangle. Click the middle of the bottom edge of the rectangle, then end the scissors mode by right-clicking away from the rectangle.

    • 7

Click and drag slightly upwards on the "Top" side of the "View Cube" in the upper right of your screen.

    • 8

Right-click a vertex at the petal's tip, then click "Select." Raise up the vertex by dragging its "z" axis a little. Repeat this instruction with the other vertex at the tip, and then with the midpoints at the petal, which you "cut" in step 6. Ensure the petal's tip is higher than the midpoints.

    • 9

Create a cylinder to represent the flower's stigma: select "Create," then "Standard Primitives," then "Cylinder." Click and drag just to the left of the petal's left end to define the stigma's base, then release the mouse button and drag upwards slightly to define its height. Click to finish the stigma.

    • 10

Left-click the petal to select it, then right-click and choose "Object Properties." Color the petal by clicking the colored frame in the dialog box and choosing a color. Color the stigma using the same procedure.

    • 11

Begin creating copies of the first petal and positioning them around the stigma: left-click the petal, then right-click it and choose "Clone." Select the "Copy" option, then click "OK." Right-click the new petal and select "Move," then drag to above the first petal.

    • 12

Right-click the new petal and click "Rotate," then click the yellow circle to rotate the petal so that it fits the stigma.

    • 13

Repeat steps 11 and 12 to create at least three more copies of the petal and place them around the stigma.

    • 14

Press the disk icon on the toolbar to save your completed flower.
