What is the florentine diamond?

The term "Florentine Diamond" refers to two distinct historical diamonds:

1. The "Florentine Diamond" or "Diamond of the Grand Duke": This is the name most commonly associated with a yellow diamond weighing 137.27 carats. It was cut in the 16th century and was part of the Medici family's collection. In 1743, it was acquired by the Habsburg dynasty and was famously owned by Maria Theresa of Austria. This diamond was most likely cut from a larger diamond found in India. Its current whereabouts are unknown.

2. The "Florentine Diamond" from the collection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany: This is another yellow diamond weighing approximately 139 carats. It was part of the Medici collection in the 17th century and was sold by the Medici family to the Grand Duke of Tuscany. This diamond was later cut into several smaller diamonds.

Due to the confusion surrounding these two diamonds, it is difficult to definitively determine which diamond is being referred to when someone mentions the "Florentine Diamond." However, the term most often refers to the 137.27-carat yellow diamond.

Other things to note:

* The "Florentine Diamond" should not be confused with the "Florentine" cut. This is a type of cut, not a specific diamond.

* The "Florentine Diamond" has a rich history and has been owned by several prominent figures throughout its existence.

Unfortunately, both the "Florentine Diamond" and the "Diamond of the Grand Duke" have disappeared from public records and their current locations are unknown.
