Why was prince henery called the navigator?

Prince Henry was called "Henry the Navigator" not because he was a navigator himself, but because of his tremendous support for exploration and navigation.

Here's why:

* He established a school of navigation: In Sagres, Portugal, Prince Henry founded a school that attracted cartographers, shipbuilders, astronomers, and navigators. This school played a vital role in advancing maritime knowledge and techniques.

* He funded expeditions: Prince Henry was a key financial supporter of Portuguese voyages of exploration along the African coast. He financed the building of ships and the salaries of explorers.

* He promoted innovation: Henry was interested in developing new technologies and techniques for navigation. He encouraged the use of astrolabes, compasses, and other instruments, and supported the development of improved sailing vessels.

While Prince Henry never sailed on these voyages himself, his patronage and support were crucial in driving Portuguese exploration and the Age of Discovery. His dedication to advancing maritime knowledge earned him the title "the Navigator."
