Instructions

    • 1

Create an armature. Make a large ball of newspaper, bigger than normal-sized head. Make smaller wads of newspaper. Use masking tape to attach these to the large ball for ears, nose, jaw and other desired features.

    • 2

Cover the armature with masking tape. Fill in any holes around it with strips of paper.

    • 3

Dip strips of newspaper into paste and apply to the armature, overlapping the strips as you proceed. Work quickly and make the strips as smooth as possible.

    • 4

Place dry strips of newspaper all over the wet strips. The dry strip will absorb some the paste from the layer of newspaper below.

    • 5

Dip strips of brown craft paper into the paste and apply all over the newspaper layer. Follow with dry strips of brown craft paper.

    • 6

Wait for the mask to dry completely. When the mask is dry, remove the newspaper armature from within. You may need to use an X-ACTO knife to remove the masking tape.

    • 7

Put the mask on to determine appropriate spots for the eyes and mouth. Mark these spots with a pen. Take the mask off and cut out the eyes and mouth.

    • 8

Finish the mask. You can paint the mask or apply colored tissue dipped in paste. You can also use items like yarn, raffia and feathers for the hair or beard.
