Measure the hat size by using the tape measure around the widest part of your head.
Add 1 inch for seam allowances.
Create the bill by cutting two layers of fabric in a crescent moon shape. This measurement should not exceed one-third of the circumference measurement. With right sides together stitch the bill together along outer curve area. Turn inside out and press. Baste the open edge closed along the curve of the crescent.
Make the cap body by cutting four or six triangles. The measurement of the triangles will equal the circumference measurement when allowing for all seam allowances. Stitch together all triangles from the pointed end outward. Backstitch to secure all seams and then trim threads. Pull all points together at the top of the triangles. Stitch across all points on wrong side, through all the layers.
Create the band by cutting a strip of fabric the circumference of the hat body, allowing ½ an inch for a seam allowance. Stitch the band together creating a circle. Fold the fabric and press as to create a double sided piece of fabric.
Pin the right side of binding to right side of hat body, all the way around the cap. Stitch around the cap. Turn the binding back and press so that the edge is an even 1 inch
all the way around the base. If desired, insert a strip of elastic for stretching. Stitch the binding around again to secure it.
Attach the bill to the front edge of the cap by pinning the bill to the front of the hat body. Stitch into place, press or steam finished hat.
Attach decorative button to the top if desired.
