Make a set of postcards as mementos of your recent trip and as cards for writing letters to friends about your experiences. Make prints of a few of your favorite photographs from the trip, and crop them if necessary. Mount a single 4-by-6-inch print on cardstock, or collage several photographs together on your postcard. Whichever method you choose, use acid-free, photo-safe paste. Consider including a plane or train ticket or a piece of a menu from a great restaurant you went to in you collage. If this collage becomes too thick three-dimensionally, make color photocopies of the postcard and cut them out.
Cut heavy watercolor paper into 4-by-6-inch squares to decorate. Paint on the postcards with watercolors, or draw on them with pen and ink, pencil or markers. You can easily carry these small cards and a set of watercolors with you while you travel, allowing you to make and send the postcards on the go. You can also illustrate a scene from a recent special occasion, or paint a landscape or still life. Experiment with abstract designs and patterns as well. Don’t forget to sign your work.
Make a collage using magazine or newspaper clippings or personal mementos. The collage doesn’t have to be a coherent scene; overlap different images in a visually striking pattern. Consider making a collage using only construction paper or tissue paper. If the postcard collage has too many edges sticking up when it is finished, make color copies of it on cardstock to cut out and send.
