How to Make a Collage From Small Pictures

Although collage is a relatively new technique for making art—Pablo Picasso is usually credited with having invented the technique in the early 20th century—the process and aesthetic of collage have quickly become very influential in all fine art media, as well as in the worlds of commercial design and advertising. Collage simply consists of juxtaposing many different images together on the same plane. These images may or may not be overtly related to each other in terms of color, theme or motif.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down a large piece of newspaper to protect your work table from any glue drips or spills.

    • 2

Peruse your collection of small pictures. Trim each picture with a pair of scissors, leaving only the most interesting portion of each picture.

    • 3

Sort the trimmed pictures into piles according to size. Save the fragments of discarded pictures in their own pile.

    • 4

Supplement your collage ingredient list by clipping additional pictures and bits of text from newspapers or magazines. Including images printed on many different types of paper will add visual interest to your collage.

    • 5

Glue your largest pictures onto a large piece of poster board or foam core. These pictures will serve as the visual anchors for your collage. Space the pictures evenly across the poster board or foam core. Use rubber cement or white glue for glossy photographs and a glue stick for thin newspaper or magazine pages.

    • 6

Glue smaller pictures between the largest pictures. Continue adding pictures until the poster board is no longer visible. Group pictures on the collage according to similarities in color, line or thematic content. Alternatively, place the pictures randomly and use chance to help determine the collage’s composition.

Fill in small gaps between pictures by trimming bits of discarded pictures to fit.
