What Is a Vertical Labret Piercing?

A vertical labret piercing is an oral piercing that sits vertically on the lower lip. The beads or balls of the jewelry are visible underneath the lower lip and resting on top of the lower lip.
  1. Description

    • A vertical labret piercing is a variation of the traditional labret piercing, with the inner hole placed on top of the lip instead of behind it.

    Size

    • Sixteen-gauge jewelry is recommended for this piercing. Jewelry that is 14-gauge and larger will be too heavy for the piercing to handle, and may result in migration or tearing of the skin.

    Types

    • A curved barbell is the correct jewelry for a vertical labret piercing. One ball sits on the top of the bottom lip, and the other sits under the lower lip in the center.

    Considerations

    • Oral piercings take at least six to eight weeks to heal. During this process, the piercee must avoid alcohol, deep kissing and oral sex. The piercee must also clean the piercing daily with soap and water and rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash to avoid swelling and infection.

    Warning

    • A vertical labret piercing must be performed by a licensed, professional body piercer. Attempting this piercing yourself or having a friend perform the procedure could result in infection, scarring, or tissue, teeth or gum damage.
