How to Keep a Lip Piercing Hidden

If you have a lip piercing, there may be times when you have to take the jewelry out. Work, weddings and corporate events are examples of occasions when others might find your lip jewelry inappropriate. If you choose to accommodate those who want you to hide your lip piercing, you can insert a piece of jewelry called a labret retainer. Oral piercings close quickly on the inside of the mouth, but a labret retainer keeps the hole open while rendering your piercing almost invisible.

Things You'll Need

  • Antibacterial soap
  • Labret retainer with O-ring

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands and the outside of your lip with liquid antibacterial soap. Dry all surfaces of your skin with a clean paper towel. Wash your new jewelry with another drop of antibacterial soap and dry it with another paper towel.

    • 2

Remove the jewelry from your piercing. For a captive bead ring, hold the bottom of the ring steady with one hand and push the bead sideways with your other hand until it pops out. Rotate the ring out of the hole and slide it off your lip. For a labret stud, hold the bar gently but firmly between your front teeth and unscrew the bead by twisting it to the left. Slide the bar through the hole on the inside of your mouth.

    • 3

Pull outward on your lip to stretch the piercing hole.

    • 4

Grasp the flat disc on the front of the labret retainer. Slide the bar of the retainer through your piercing from the inside of your lip to the outside. The flat disc should be inside your mouth, the pointed end on the outside.

    • 5

Roll the O-ring onto the pointed end of the jewelry. Slide the ring up against your face to hold the retainer snugly in place.
