How to Treat an Infected Labret Piercing

Body piercings are a popular form of self expression; however, they are still puncture wounds that can tax the immune system of even the most healthy person. A labret piercing is located on the lower lip. This placement can cause the piercing to come into contact with infection-causing bacteria for a variety of reasons. When a piercing becomes infected, it is very important that proper steps are taken to clear up the infection before complications can occur.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact a doctor immediately. Piercing infections cannot be countered by topical, over-the-counter remedies. Visit your doctor to have a proper course of medication prescribed. If your doctor is not available, try an urgent care clinic or your local emergency room -- infections should not wait.

Keep your jewelry in place until you can discuss the options with your physician. Removing the jewelry may cause an infected piercing to close. This can result in an abscess underneath the skin, trapping the infection.

    • 3

Take a course of antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor. In order for antibiotics to be effective, the complete course must be taken without a break or early finish. Continue any piercing aftercare, if necessary, while antibiotics are being taken.
