Nautical Stars Tattoo Ideas

The nautical star looks like a traditional five-pointed star with one side of each point shaded to give the star dimension. Suitable for more than just sailors, these stars are popular in tattoo designs because of their simplicity and versatility. Nautical stars have long been a symbol for finding your way in life, as well as an Irish symbol for health and a pagan symbol for life. Mariners used to get nautical stars tattooed on themselves as a good luck symbol for finding their way home again. Others may use this tattoo to remind them to reflect on the good things in life.
  1. Single Star

    • Single nautical stars can be the perfect choice for your first tattoo. They are usually small with no complicated lines, making them inexpensive. They stand alone well, but also work well with other tattoos. You can express yourself through them easily by choosing original colors.

The most popular place for a first tattoo is the back of the neck. Here, a tattoo can be hidden by hair or a shirt collar. Another good spot is behind your ear. This is especially popular among women because the tiny star is easily covered by hair or a scarf. The lower back, ankle and shoulder are all good choices. A nautical star on the inside of your wrist could symbolize gay pride.

    Stars and Symbols

    • Many people like to combine nautical stars with other symbols to make a statement. For instance, nautical stars of different sizes intertwined with flowers could represent a bright outlook on life along with efforts for personal growth. Of course, this combination is also very intricate and makes exquisite body decoration, especially if twined along the ribcage, around a calf or splayed across the shoulders.

Men and women alike may want to tap into their "pirate" or punk side with a few nautical stars framing a skull and crossbones. A skull and crossed swords or a sparrow combined with a circle or a spiral trail of nautical stars could also be a good choice for a lover of punk style.

Those in the Navy may want to combine a circle of nautical stars with the American bald eagle or the British Union Jack. Those with loved ones in the Navy may want a tattoo of stars around their loved one's name and position.

    Star Clusters

    • Trailing star clusters make very artistic tattoos, especially for women. A large star with many smaller stars behind it could look like a shooting star or a galaxy on your back, across your collarbones or on the ribcage. Spirals of stars grouped together could make an attractive "permanent" necklace or pretty tattoo sleeve on your upper arm. Combine these star clusters with line drawings of cats or tiny fairies to make them especially feminine.

Either sex could enjoy a cluster of stars in the shape of a favorite constellation or an original constellation that outlines the shape of a skull, a larger star or even words. Make symbolic words like "strength," "hope" or even inspirational words in other languages. You can also get stars clustered to shape the names of loved ones.
