How to Create Name Art With Barb Wire

Barbed wire is no longer associated with just fencing. Many artists are incorporating barbed wire into intricate artwork. The wire lends itself to making an interesting statement about an everyday object often used as a security device re-imagined into a craft. You can use the wire to create your own name to hang or give as a gift. Wear gloves whenever handling the wire, because the sharp edges will do a great amount of damage.

      Purchase barbed wire and some heavy duty pliers. Lay the barbed wire flat against the floor.

      Wrap the barbed wire in a piece of canvas. You may need to wrap the long piece of barbed wire twice. Secure the canvas with tape, so that the sharp barbs do not go into your skin while you are manipulating the wire.

      Decide how large your want your name in barbed wire. Type in your name at the size you want your art work to be on your computer and print it out. Play around with different fonts, but use something easy to start out with.

      Set the wire on the printed copy of your name. Use pliers to bend the barbed wire into the shape of your name. Wrap the wire around letters like m that require the wire to double over itself to make the letter.

      Cut the wire with wire cutters. Tie a loop on the top of your name, so you can hang your piece of barbed wire art up. Cut off the canvas to reveal your artwork.
