How to Create a Poem With a Child's Name

Poetry is everywhere: in actions, in nature and even in our names. You can write a poem based on a child's name's meaning or even use the name itself to create a poem. A poem that is constructed using the letters in a word or name is called an acrostic. An acrostic poem makes a perfect gift for a child's birthday or other special occasion.

Instructions

    • 1

Write out the child's name vertically on a piece of paper. For example:

      J

      E

      N

      N

      I

      F

      E

      R

Compose the poem based on this formation. Choose one word that begins with each letter of the child's name. Select words that describe the child's personality and behavior. They can also describe or be inspired by the event the poem is being written for. To continue this example:

      Joyous

      Energetic

      Needed

      Nice

      Intelligent

      Fun

      Excellent

      Radical

Write another acrostic poem based on the child's name. In this example, each sentence begins with one letter from the child's name. This variation offers you a bit more flexibility. Instead of trying to keep what you want to say to one word per line, you can now add multiple words to each line in the poem. You could even write this style of acrostic poem with rhyming lines. For example:

Just when I thought I couldn't be happier, you

      Entered my life and

      Now I know true love,

      Now I know true joy.

      I wish

For you the love and joy I feel to

      Enter your life. And always

      Remember: I love you.
