Grants for Individual Visual Artists

Many foundations offer grants only to institutions, nonprofit organizations or other established organizations. If you are a visual artist, you can find grants to support your work if you know where to look. Individual grants often require you to use your creativity to demonstrate that your project fits into a specialized niche or can otherwise be marketed to a specific viewer base.
  1. Barbara Deming Memorial Fund

    • The Barbara Deming Memorial Fund offers grants of up to to $1,500 for women visual artists. Projects must demonstrate feminist values. Women Arts, a foundation providing a directory of grants for female artists, indicates that this fund does not maintain a website or phone line; all communication with this fund must be made via regular mail. The deadline for visual art grant applications is December 31 each year.

    Kentucky Foundation for Women

    • The Kentucky Foundation for Women provides grants for female artists living in Kentucky, including visual artists who create art for the purpose of social change. Visual artists must submit samples of prior work, a proposal for new work and materials supporting an understanding of feminism. Artists are eligible both for grants supporting the creation of new work and to study or create art in residency programs. Grants up to $7,500 are available, although the Kentucky Foundation for Women website indicates that full funding is rare and typical grants range from $3,000 to $5,000. Applicants must have resided in Kentucky for at least one year prior to application.
