Basic doesn't mean ineffective, it simply means that you're choosing a less-expensive---and likely faster---way to produce your promotional material. You can create these simple flyers on your own computer using templates and tools in basic word processing software. You can then print them at home or at a local photocopy or print shop. Stick to standard paper sizes, too, often referred to as "full-page," "half-page" and "postcard," and consider bulk printing your flyers since you can often get a better price for printing more (See References 2 and 3).
You'll also want to use to normal bond paper---the most popular paper, meaning it costs less---in either white or a color. Using colored paper can make a big difference, especially when you're only printing in black ink.
You don't need to tell a person everything in a flyer, only enough to make them come to your business or event. Use a big headline---less than a sentence ideally---that includes the most important information. Keep it clean looking and use smart flyer techniques to make it irresistible. Whatever you do, be sure to include an address, directions, a telephone number and a website.
If you're willing to spend a bit more, the options are limitless. You can use more advanced desktop publishing software to create anything from 3-D effects to beautiful computer generated images. However, such software can require previous training, so you might want to consider looking for a local graphic designer for assistance at a fair price. You may also consider a higher quality paper and unique shapes. For instance, a flyer for a men's store could be cut into the shape of a necktie or shirt. Or imagine a flyer folded into an origami crane for a Japanese restaurant.
As with basic flyers, remember to keep it simple and include basic contact information.
Flyers have been around for literally hundreds of years, and there are several established tricks that businesses regularly apply to achieve better results. Including special offers can immediately generate more interest in your flyer, and get more people in the door. You could also turn your flyer into a coupon offering a lower price for customers who bring it with them, which lets you track how of many people act on your flyers, thus determining their success. If your business has a well known brand, use its colors in your flyer, and be sure to include the logo and slogan prominently. Plus, consider tricks like humor, rhyming copy or connecting your flyer to a major holiday or local event to make it more memorable.
