Find a quilling pattern you would like to quill. Patterns consist of a photo or drawing of the finished item and the length and color of paper strip you need to form each individual paper shape. It will be obvious from the photo or drawing what shape the strip will become.
Measure the strip of paper to the length specified by the pattern and tear it off. Tearing it allows the glued end to blend in with the rest of the roll more naturally than a cut end.
Moisten one end of the strip lightly on a dampened a sponge. Hold it against one forefinger and lay the needle-like quilling tool across the very end of the strip and perpendicular to it. Pressing the tool into your finger, begin to roll the tool with the other hand so that the strip winds around the needle, using your thumb to help.
Wind the paper strip all the way up, keeping the edges in line so that it forms a disk. Slide the disk off the needle and allow it to unroll slightly. Apply a small bit of glue to the free end with a toothpick and hold it down until it is secure.
Pinch the roll into the shape required by the pattern. Combine the shapes according to the pattern and glue them in place. Use the quilling as part of other artworks or crafts, or simply hang it alone.
