Earth Day Display Ideas

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22. It's an opportunity for people to learn about environmental sustainability, the problems that are threatening the planet, and things they can do to live more sustainable lives. Many communities have Earth Day celebrations with music, activities, and educational opportunities. Booths and displays are often set up at these events for public education.
  1. Information Booth

    • The easiest Earth Day display is an information booth, which can be as simple as a table filled with books, leaflets, bumper stickers, and T-shirts. Accompanied by a few knowledgeable activists, a table can draw people's attention. You can make a booth more elaborate by including upright displays with photographs, posters, and information on various ecological issues. Including a television and DVD player, ideally run on an on-site solar panel, gives you the opportunity to show educational videos. Any videos shown should be available for purchase as a means of public education and fundraising.

    Banners

    • Greenpeace has made the giant banner technique famous. Big banners are dramatic and eye-catching. Your banner should include contact information for your group, and your slogan should be simple, brief, and memorable. If you're participating in an Earth Day celebration next to a large building, try to get permission ahead of time to hang your banner on the building. A 50-foot banner reading “Save the Planet: Outlaw 8-Cylinder Engines” will gain more attention than a lot of little tables in a park.

    Globe

    • Build a globe to represent the Earth. While you can do this in a number of ways, the easiest is probably to build a framework of wood cross-braces and chicken wire covered with papier mâché. Paint the surface with the oceans and continents, highlighting areas where different events are happening, for example, rainforest destruction, melting ice caps, and endangered wildlife. There's nothing like a 10-foot-tall globe sitting in the middle of a street to get people's attention.
