Take photographs of your dog in different stances for visual reference purposes. Develop your photos, or if you have a digital camera, upload them to your computer. Observe your dog's photos noting specific characteristics, such as a wonky snout, drooping eyes, one ear up and the other down, clumsy paws and unusual fur markings that you might want to exaggerate further to create your cartoon version of your dog.
Pick up your black pen and open your sketchbook and practice drawing a cartoon version of your dog. Draw loosely, spontaneously and exaggerate as you first draw the outline of your dog. Next fill in the detail of your dogs features. You might opt to draw a basic shape for your dogs head and attach it to a larger body shape to give it a child-like quality, adding to the visual humor of your cartoon dog. Alternatively, you could place a sheet of tracing paper onto a photo, and comically trace your dog's outline by exaggerating certain aspects of its anatomy. You do not have to trace or draw every detail of your dog, just sufficient elements to hint at your dog's character.
Try adding shading or color to your cartoon dog, if you prefer it. You can use a color medium of your choice, but art pens are the quickest and more effective medium and are commonly used by cartoonists.
Think up a humorous scenario for your cartoon strip. Plan how many frames you will need to be able to tell your story.
Draw your sequence of frames to house your cartoon pictures by using a ruler or a set square. The frames should be the same size and should be an equal distance apart.
Think about how you are going to visually plot your story and start drawing your comic strip, just letting your pen do the work. Do not think too much; just be free and expressive. The comic style is not perfect and imperfections can add to the visual humor of the cartoon drawing. If you require it, draw in your backgrounds to visually set your story. Initially, you could always draw your cartoon in pencil to give you the opportunity to erase any mistakes and you can go over it with pen later.
Write your speech balloons to add brief dialogue to your comic strip. Write your speech above the action and the character speaking or thinking, in pencil. Then draw a balloon shape around the words. You can go over the pencil with black pen when you are finished. Erase any pencil lines or marks, if any.
