How to Restretch Silkscreen Frames

If you do a lot of silkscreen prints, you will need to replace your screen at some point. A silkscreen can be damaged when you are printing or cleaning. Most damage that is done to a silkscreen is done when you are cleaning stencils out of the screen. Restretching a silkscreen takes a little bit of time, but it’s not too hard for most people to do. The hardest part of restretching a silkscreen is pulling the fabric tight.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the side of the silkscreen that has the silkscreen mesh on it. Measure the length and width, but don’t worry about the sides. You will need to add 4 inches to the length and width for your final size.

    • 2

Purchase a new piece of silkscreen mesh for you to use to restretch the frame. Silkscreen mesh is available in different mesh qualities. It ranges from 6XX to 20XX. The 6XX is a wider mesh, and the 20XX is very fine. Fine mesh will give you better detail on the prints that come from the silkscreen.

    • 3

Remove the old taped border and silkscreen mesh from the silkscreen. You will remove the taped border by using a screwdriver to lift up the corner edges of the tape, and pulling the tape off. Remove the silkscreen by placing a flat screwdriver tip under the staples and lifting the staples out of the wood.

    • 4

Use the scrub brush to clean all of the excess ink, shellac and dirt from the frame. Allow the frame to dry completely before you start stretching the frame.

    • 5

Dip the silkscreen mesh into cold water and squeeze out all of the excess water.

    • 6

Lay the silkscreen mesh on top of a flat surface. Flatten out the material.

    • 7

Center the frame on top of the screen with the side that the silkscreen mesh was on originally facing the fabric.

    • 8

Place your hand on the center of the fabric edge on the right side. Bend the fabric up and place one staple on the fabric.

    • 9

Go to the mesh on the center of the left side of the frame. Pull the mesh upward gently to tighten the fabric and put a staple into the fabric. Pull the fabric at the center of the bottom and top the same way.

    • 10

Begin connecting the mesh all the way around the frame. You will work around the frame just like you would a piece of canvas. Stretch the fabric to the right of the first staple with your hand and add a staple. Repeat the procedure with the fabric directly across from the last staple. Continue working your way towards the edges. Make sure that when you stretch it on one side, you stretch it on the opposite side. Once you get to the end, tuck the fabric like you would on a present and staple it into place.

    • 11

      Trim off the excess fabric.

    • 12

Place tape around the edges of the mesh and over the staples. Continue putting tape around the outside of the frame to create a neat edge that looks similar to what you originally peeled off.

    • 13

Paint the tape with shellac and allow it to dry. Add a second coat of shellac and allow it to dry overnight before using the frame.
