How to Drop Frames From Film

Dropping frames from a film is necessary for various post-processing purposes, including but not limited to increasing the speed of the film and removing unwanted scenes or artifacts from the film. Frames can be dropped from pre-encoded films as well as from the raw capture prior to encoding the digital file. Sometimes, frames are inadvertently dropped during the capture process due to inefficient computer hardware, causing serious file errors. Properly dropping frames from a film requires powerful video-editing software capable of removing frames while retaining the integrity and playability of the digital file.

Instructions

    • 1

Capture the film using a video-editing software and save the file on your computer. There are dozens of software programs available for purchase online that can capture video frame-by-frame.

    • 2

Decide which frames to cut from the film. Make notes of the frame numbers to be eliminated. If the purpose for cutting frames is to increase the speed of the film, check to see if the video-editing software has a built-in frame-remover function. If not, try removing every third frame.

    • 3

Save a copy of the unedited file to an alternate location to keep as a backup in case of a frame error.

    • 4

Remove the frames from the film. Play back the edited film to check if desired results were achieved.
