How to Color a Map Using Rubbings

Rubbings give texture to any work of art. When used to color a map this process may help suggest topographical features, like mountain ranges or forests. Using rubbings to color maps makes an excellent way to create mementos of your travels. Simply place a map of a location you visited over objects specific to your journey. Raised writing on the sides of bottles or lettering on historic plaques may be used for rubbings under your map.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the object from which you wish to make a rubbing. Try to find an object with a flat back and a raised surface on the top. This makes it easier to make your rubbing.

    • 2

Lay the textured object on a flat work surface with the textured side up.

    • 3

Secure the map to the textured object with masking tape. Make sure that the top, bottom and sides are taped down so the map does not move during rubbing.

    • 4

Color the map using crayons in the hue of your choice. Use a light touch in horizontal motions. Switch to vertical strokes to capture every angle of the textured object's surface.

    • 5

Rub over the map in crayon with increased pressure to bring out the details of the textured object.

    • 6

Remove the map from the textured object by carefully lifting the tape.
