How Do I Categorize Color Palettes?

Color palettes, also called color schemes, are used in many artistic areas -- including painting, graphic design and interior design. These palette types are classified according to where each color sits on the color wheel. Knowing the different palettes is important, as they can evoke different responses and can be used for specific purposes. Categorizing a color palette can be achieved by observing the colors used and the relations between them.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the hue of the color palette. A color palette comprised of different shades of the same hue denotes a monochromatic color scheme.

    • 2

Recognize colors that neighbor each other on the color wheel. Color schemes with three or more neighboring colors are considered analogous color schemes.

    • 3

Observe colors that oppose each other on the color wheel. Color palettes involving opposite colors are known as complementary color palettes.
