How to Build a Lincoln Log Cabin Using Pennies

School-aged children will do many activities and craft projects, mostly depending on the holidays. Presidents Day is unique in the fact that multiple Presidents are celebrated on one day. Making a Lincoln Log Cabin is one way to help children celebrate this holiday. Many cabins are made using wooden sticks as a frame and a single penny in the window. For more texture and visual interest, cover an entire cabin with pennies. The pennies act as shingles over the wood frame, keeping the project as light as can be.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw out the outline of a rectangle on a piece of cardboard. Make the length two sticks long and the width one stick long.

    • 2

Glue one stick standing up, long side running parallel to the cardboard, on the outline of the rectangle. Allow to dry slightly so it will stand on its own.

    • 3

Glue another stick perpendicular to the cardboard, about 1/3 in from the edge. This piece should be on the interior of the previous stick.

    • 4

Glue additional craft sticks, perpendicular to the cardboard, around the frame of the cabin -- keeping them on the inside of the walls.

    • 5

Build the rest of the cabin walls by gluing additional sticks up the length of the perpendicular craft sticks. After this is done, you should have a rough box without a top.

    • 6

Make half of the roof by laying three craft sticks equally apart with one in the middle. Start gluing more craft sticks on top of the three to make a plank. The middle should have parts of both sides of roof on it.

    • 7

Build an additional half of a roof and set aside to dry. Trim any overhangs with a pair of scissors.

    • 8

Erect the roof by placing a bead of glue between the two halves and the upper edge of the walls. Place the roof on top and hold in place for a few moments until it is dry.

    • 9

Glue on individual pennies, starting from the bottom of the walls, working upward. Do the same for the roof, working towards the apex of the roof.
