How to Create Small Calendars

Many artists choose to publish a calendar for the upcoming new year, partly as advertising and partly as a gift to friends and associates. With the development of computer software graphics, along with reliable desktop printing, this goal is within affordable reach of all sorts of enterprising designers. A calendar can vary from one small page that merely gives the name and address of the publisher to an elaborate color artwork that is printed on archival quality paper to create images that will last far beyond the next year.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if you want to include artwork with your calendar. If you don't, the process is simple, just follow the parts of this procedure that deal with layout and printing. Instead of including artwork, you can just put in your business name and address. If you do want to use original art, then you will want to work through all the steps of this article

    • 2

Select your artwork. You will need one image for each month, and that image will have to be uploaded to your computer either by scanner or digital camera. If the artwork is not going online, resolution can remain high, and file type is not limited to GIFs, JPGs or PNGs. If you do choose an online site for layout and printing, you will need to use one of the three formats, but resolution can be higher than 72 pixels per inch.

    • 3

Choose an offline template. This is done from a software program that is purchased and transferred to your computer. Some of the common sources of templates include Microsoft Publishing, Microsoft Office, Photoshop Elements, InDesign and Illustrator. With any of these software programs, you can print at home with or without images. You also can determine size and background color for your annual record of dates. These templates vary in complexity, but the range of calendars that you can print at home is quite varied.

Go online to a site like Lulu or Cafe Press and make your calendar through one of the templates that are available online. With these sites it will not cost anything to set up the calendar template, and download your images into the format. You can even sell your calendar online to other parties without charge. However, if you want to have a copy of your own calendar to hang on your own wall, you will have to buy it through the site. Still, the marketing potential here is huge (see Resources). And even if you don't market, you will probably have fun looking around the sites and making your own calendars. Be aware that if you go this route, there is no need to continue with the remaining steps.

    • 5

Print each page of the calendar on an inkjet printer using good paper and ink.

    • 6

Arrange the calendar by months, then put the 12 pages in a neat stack with all sides even.

    • 7

Use a hole puncher to place three holes across the tops of all pages. With only 12 pages you should be able to go through the stack with one try.

    • 8

Cut three 6-inch strips of colored yarn and feed one end of the yarn through one of the holes. Do this for each hole.

    • 9

Loop the yarn through each hole three times and then tie the loose ends together with a square knot.
