How to Print on Acid-Free Tissue Paper

Acid-free tissue paper is the perfect material for making block prints, which are traditionally done on Japanese rice paper. While rice paper is usually considered to be of higher quality than tissue paper, it is also far more expensive, making tissue paper perfect for the classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your work surface. Block printing is best done on a surface that provides you ample room for your materials. You may want to lay down newspaper or other scrap paper in order to protect your surface from stains.

    • 2

Add a dollop of ink to your palette. You may choose to use the ink as is, or, using your palette knife, mix with another ink to create a new color to work with. Ensure that you have mixed your colors completely before attempting to work with them.

    • 3

Use your brayer to roll the ink into an extremely thin film on your palette. Roll vertically, then horizontally to create an even layer.

    • 4

Roll a thin layer of ink onto your block with the brayer. If the layer of film is too weak, you can apply more ink by repeating the process.

    • 5

Place a piece of tissue paper on your work surface. Carefully and slowly apply the inked side of the block to the tissue paper, using increasing amounts of pressure with your hands. Slowly remove the block; if there are inconsistencies, you may have used too little or too much ink. Adjust the amount of ink and start fresh until the print is to your liking.
