How to Care for a Cow's Hunting Horn

Artisans often use cow-horn to create utilitarian products such as drinking and powder horns. Reproductions of horn-products sometimes incorporate carving, scrimshaw or other decorative touches. The proper care of an antique or reproduction horn-product extends its life and improves its appearance.

  • Warm water and mild soap
  • French chalk
  • Silicone wax

      Clean the horn with warm water mixed with a mild soap. Dip a cotton rag in the water and wipe the horn. Never soak the horn in water.

      Patch scratches with a chalk paste. The paste is made by mixing water and French chalk. Rub the paste into the cracks in the cow horn.

      Apply a silicone wax to the clean horn. Rub the wax into the horn using a soft, cotton cloth. If the horn is used for food or liquid consumption, rub it with olive oil.
