How to Paint a Chickaboom Tree on a Wall

Painting a wall mural for a child's bedroom helps to create a stimulating and imaginative environment. This is especially true when it involves painting the alphabet tree known as the Chickaboom tree from the story "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" by Martin and Archambault. The Chickaboom tree is relatively simple to paint once the tree has been drawn to scale on the wall, as it can be painted in flat blocks of bold color and decorated with alphabet letters.

Instructions

    • 1

Photocopy the storybook illustration of the Chickaboom tree, or open your sketchbook and draw a quick pencil sketch of the tree, using the storybook as a reference.

    • 2

Draw a square grid, about one inch squared, on the photocopy or sketch of the Chickaboom tree. Use a pencil and ruler to draw the grid.

    • 3

Draw an enlarged square grid on the wall. Rule out a rectangle on the wall with a meter rule and divide into the same number of squares contained in the small grid on the picture.

    • 4

Observe the picture grid of the Chickaboom tree and transfer the image to the wall. Draw what you see, drawing one grid square at a time. Keep each line drawn within the correct proportions to be able to paint a true likeness of the Chickaboom tree.

    • 5

Erase the grid lines on the mural of the tree.

    • 6

Paint the Chickaboom tree. Use Liquitex Soft Body Acrylics, latex- or oil-based paints. Use synthetic brushes of different sizes. A wide, flat brush is good for covering large areas, while a round brush is suitable for filling in the detail. Apply a bright grass-green for the coconut leaves and a mid-brown for the tree trunk. Paint a black outline around the tree, and use black and to add bark detail, such as the ring lines climbing up the trunk. Add contrast by using darker tones to paint areas in shadow, if preferred.

    • 7

Paint the alphabet letters, or stick children's toy alphabet letters on the painting of the Chickaboom tree.
