How to Use a Computer to Make a Wall Stencil

It's a rare talent to be able to grab a paintbrush and freehand a pattern on a wall. Many people wouldn't dream of taking that approach to wall decorating. Fortunately, other options for customizing your paint job are available that don't require stellar talent. With the use of a stencil, anyone can transfer a beautiful pattern on to a wall with consistency and style. You can visit a crafts store and hope they have what you're looking for, but you are better off finding a design that you like on your computer and creating the stencil yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Go online and locate a stencil design that you like. Many websites offer free stencil designs to Web surfers such as Free-StencilingPatterns.com, FashionFrog.com and All-About-Stencils.com. Right-click an image that you like and select "Save as" from the context menu. Save the file to your desktop.

    • 2

Draw your own unique pattern using Microsoft Paint if you can't find a suitable image online. Click "Start," type "Paint" in the search bar and click "Paint" from the list of results. Use the "Pencil" tool to draw free lines; add shapes using the "Oval" and "Rectangle" tools. Don't worry about color choices, as you'll be using wall paint for that. When creating your image, you must draw it as you would to carve a pumpkin. You need to leave space between the different elements of the design so the stencil stays together when you cut it out.

Load your printer with glossy photo paper. The paper choice is important because the glossy surface of the photo paper will hold up better to the wet paint you'll be dabbing on it. Print your design.

Place the printed image on a safe cutting surface and use a hobby knife to cut out the elements of the stencil. When you are finished cutting, you'll be ready to stencil your wall.
