How to Design Your Own Diamond Band

The days of the average person going to a jeweler and only being able to choose from a select number of pre-designed rings are over. Now, on the same budget you'd use to purchase a commercially designed ring, you can customize and design a diamond band to fit your preferences, taste and financial needs. Whether for an upcoming wedding or just for fun, designing your own diamond band ensures you'll have a one-of-kind, personalized piece of jewelry, and it can also be an educational experience.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Compile pictures of jewelry that you like in an old scrapbook or picture album to refer to. Make notes alongside pictures about what you like in certain pieces.

    • 2

Purchase jewelry design books. Learn about materials and stones along with styles.

    • 3

Find a jeweler online or through word of mouth who will create a diamond band for you from your design. Inquire about pricing, whether they sell diamonds, and the cost of the precious metals and materials being put in to the diamond band.

    Designing

    • 4

Sort through the jewelry design pictures you have collected, and isolate the top 10 designs of diamond bands that you like. Using the drawing pad and colored pencils on an open table space, begin to draw your own diamond band. Try to incorporate elements of design in the diamond band you design from those that you liked in different pictures.

    • 5

Determine the size, shape, color, and cut of diamond or diamonds that you want in your diamond band. Research online about diamonds and their cost. Decide what kind of metal you want your diamond band to be made of.

    • 6

Revise your diamond band design depending on cost factors of stones and metals, if need be. Set up an appointment with local jewelers and bring in your design(s) to show to them. Ask about cost of labor and time in having them make the diamond band you designed.

    • 7

Get a written estimate from the jeweler, if possible, regarding the cost of the diamond(s), precious metals and hourly labor. Get the jewelers business card and some references. Ask them to write down approximately how long it will take from start to finish, once a custom order is placed with them and paid for, for them to create the diamond band that you have designed.
