How to Customize a Mural

Thinking of redecorating, but your dull wall mural needs a face lift? Maybe you don't want to paint over it for fear of upsetting the artist. The creative solution is simple: Customize your wall mural by turning it into a mixed-media tapestry. Instructions

    • 1

Look at the mural and see what areas you could customize. For instance, the sky, flower arrangements, items of beaded jewelry, plain garments and patterned decor are potential elements to consider.

    • 2

Apply dried flowers to customize a dull flower arrangement in the mural. Make sure that the colors in the dried flowers will complement the colors in the mural. Cut the heads off the dried flowers. Glue each flower head to the center of each painted flower in the mural, so that the painted stems bloom into a real bunch of dried flowers. Decorate the vase with sequins or beads to enhance the flower arrangement.

    • 3

Bring an empty sky to life with birds. Use three or more clay or plastic bird plaques, which should be available in your local craft store. Paint your bird plaques with acrylic paint, if necessary. Place your flying birds in the sky using glue.

    • 4

Make items of pearl jewelry stand out by covering over them with craft beads. Choose bead colors similar to those in the mural. Stick the beads over the painted beads.

    • 5

Use beads or sequins to add decorative details to a plain item of female clothing, handbag or appropriate plain surface. Design a pattern on paper and draw the design onto the mural in pencil. Choose a selection of beads or sequins to glue to the mural to complete the pattern detail.

    • 6

Paint some stencil designs onto a table cloth or to a background wall in a mural. Plastic stencils are available in your local craft store.

    • 7

Use seashells and pebbles in a mural of a seascape. Stick seashells and pebbles in a random manner across the painted sands.

    • 8

Enhance a mosaic design in a mural by gluing down small squares of colored paper, colored glass or stones.
