Art Project Ideas for The Tortilla Curtain

Create meaningful art projects based on the novel "The Tortilla Curtain." The book, written by T.C. Boyle, was published in 1995. The title of the book comes from a common phrase for the Mexican border, the tortilla curtain, according to the Swiss Education Team website. Art students can use symbolism, themes and motifs from the book to inspire one-of-a-kind art projects.
  1. Coyotes

    • The coyote is a recurrent symbol in "The Tortilla Curtain," which is why it is excellent inspiration for an art project. Since the coyote is a symbol of immigrants within the book, students can draw, sculpt or paint their own interpretation of the coyote as a symbol of Mexican immigrants.

    Welded Gates

    • Gates are another prominent part of the book, both for keeping coyotes out of a backyard and for US neighborhoods trying to keep illegal immigrants out. This welded art project can be reminiscent of the book and can include color and decoration to portray the artists' interpretation of the gates in the book. Use a gas welder, 1-inch metal channel bars, metal hinges and gate hardware, as well as other materials that will contribute to the artist's rendition of this piece. Use of a gas welder will require protective gloves and eye protection.

    Conflict Art

    • An art piece representing conflict is another project idea for "The Tortilla Curtain" book. This conflict art should be an abstract piece and can include anything from contrasting colors on the color wheel to a scene of two persons in conflict. The artist should choose a conflict motif from the book and draw inspiration for this art project.

    The American Dream

    • Students can create their own depiction of "The American Dream" for this art project idea. Projects may be as simple as a drawing of the American flag or as multifaceted as a built-to-scale house that looks like the typical "American Dream" home. Let students create what they translate to be "The American Dream," as it will differ from person to person.
