Liquid Felt for Art Projects

Liquid felt a modified bitumen emulsion that is often used for finishing construction and roofing projects. This material is user friendly and versatile enough where you can also use it to protect the exterior of your own art projects. This is a one-coat application that is easy to clean up.
  1. Uses

    • Liquid felt is traditionally used to waterproof surfaces such as roofs, concrete, cement, slate, and metal. However, you can also apply liquid felt to your art projects to achieve the same effect. This material would be best suited for outdoor creations such as sculptures, carvings or fountains.

    Features

    • Liquid felt is seamless, durable and flexible once applied to a surface. Liquid felt dries to have a black, solar-reflective surface.

    Application

    • You do not need to apply primer to your art project before applying liquid felt to the surface. You only need one coat of liquid felt with a paintbrush to get the coverage that you need but you can add a second coat if you desire. If you are working on this project outside, make sure that it is above 5 degrees Celsius and that no rain is forecast for at least 24 hours after application to allow for thorough drying. Make sure the surface is free of cracks, dirt and debris. It can be dry or slightly damp, but not wet. When you are applying liquid felt, you can occasionally dampen your paintbrush to prevent clotting.

    Cleanup

    • This product is water based and is more environmentally friendly than other products since it does not contain any solvents. You can clean your paintbrush and work surface with soap and water if the liquid felt is still wet. You will have to use mineral spirits if it dries on your skin or other surfaces. Store the unused product in a sealed container in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight and other elements. You can store liquid felt for a year.

    Tips

    • Work in a well ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes and wear eye protection. Flush eyes immediately with water if you get liquid felt in the eye area.
