How to Graph Calculator Art Projects

Your graphing calculator can do much more than solve for x or illustrate a function -- it can generate art. While it may not seem like a great place for an artistic masterpiece, the screen of a graphing calculator can actually host a variety of work, letting you combine shapes or even draw freehand. Whether you're bored in class or just want to explore what your calculator can do, try doing a graphing art project. These instructions are appropriate for the Ti-83 models.

Instructions

Press the "Y=" button. If you have any equations, press the "Delete" button to clear them.

    • 2

Remove the x and y axes, if you want, by pressing the "2nd" button followed by the "Format" button. Select "Axes Off." Press "Enter."

    • 3

Press the "Graph" button to go to the graph screen. To draw, press "2nd" and "Draw." This will give you a list of drawing options, such as lines, circles or free-style pen. Choose the style you want to use.

    • 4

Use the arrow keys to draw, pressing "Enter" when you finish a line.

    • 5

Go to the home screen when you finish your drawing and want to save it. Press the "Draw" button, then press the right arrow key twice. Click "StorePic," then press "Enter." This will take you to the home screen, where you can enter the number you want to assign the picture. You can store up to 10 pictures. To bring a picture up again, press "RecallPic" instead of "StorePic" in the previous steps.
