How to Quilt With Art Projects & Patterns

An art project design can be blended with a traditional quilt pattern to create a one-of-a-kind quilt that can serve double-duty as a cherished memento and a bed covering. Photo transfer fabric, found at fabric shops, will transform the art project into a fabric pattern. Stick to an uncomplicated checkerboard quilt pattern with the same color palette as the art project for a unified design.

Instructions

    • 1

Photograph the art project with the digital camera. Download the photo and print it on 15 sheets of photo transfer fabric. Peel off the photo transfer paper backing.

    • 2

Cut the quilt fabric into 15 rectangles measuring 8.5 by 11 inches.

    • 3

Sew one photo-fabric rectangle to a quilt-fabric rectangle, right sides together, 1/4-inch from the length-side edge.

    • 4

Continue to sew the photo-fabric rectangles and quilt-fabric rectangles together in a checkerboard row of 5 rectangles. Repeat to create 6 checkerboard rows, beginning three rows with the photo-fabric rectangles and three rows with the quilt-fabric rectangles.

    • 5

Pin one checkerboard row to another row, matching seams, keeping the alternating checkerboard design intact. Repeat, until all rows have been sewn together for the completed quilt top.

    • 6

Cut the quilt batting and muslin-fabric backing to the exact measurements of the completed quilt top. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Insert a safety pin in the center of each quilt rectangle to hold the layers together.

    • 7

Hand sew small stitches in all patchwork seam grooves to connect the three layers of the quilt.

    • 8

Cut a 2-inch strip of muslin the length of the perimeter of the completed quilt for a quilt edging.

    • 9

Sew the edging to the quilt, right sides of fabric together, 1/4-inch from the quilt top edge, using the sewing machine. Fold the edging over a 1/2-inch, twice, and hand sew it to the quilt back.
