This is a fun art project for a group of students. The objective is to design a robot sculpture or to recreate a known cinematic robot using tin cans. This exercise requires each student to work as a cooperative member of the design team to construct a giant tin can robot. The size of the sculpture will depend on how many tin cans are available for the project, and each student is responsible for contributing cans to the project.
Have students use tin cans to produce a functional piece of furniture. Students can make any type of furniture in a miniature version for easy management. Students should design the piece of furniture on paper before making their aluminum can furniture. The tin cans can be stacked, crushed or manipulated in any way, to create the piece of furniture.
Create a giant tin can mosaic of a famous modern painting. Crush each tin can flat into a mosaic tin tile. Hang a large board panel on the wall and draw the famous painting on the board by by projecting the image of the painting on the wall and tracing over the image projection. Glue the tin mosaic tiles onto the image of the painting to create the tin can mosaic.
Design your own tin can label as a graphics design art project. Use the project as a class or year-long art and design competition. Competitors can choose to design the label on paper or by computer aided design. They also must create a new brand name. Additionally, competitors can create an advertisement to sell the product to the class during a class presentation.
