Write down what you think your band, music style or production studio represents. Note a list of 10 things that you think defines you and your talent --- think about your influences and hobbies (musical or otherwise) as well as the instruments you play.
Look at your list for any recurring themes or striking images. Because these themes and images are drawn from your musical influences and skills, they relate more to your sound and style. You might find, for example, that the list has a running Japanese theme or you might be drawn to the image of an instrument like an electric guitar or trumpet. Select three or four items and themes to which you are attracted.
Sketch some potential logo designs onto paper. Experiment with shape, size and object. Write in the name of your band or production studio on the logo. Remember that less is more: the most famous company logos are the ones that are simple, understated but relevant. For example, if you have a Japanese theme running through your ideas and you are a solo guitarist, try using the red spot from the Japanese flag and draw two or three vertical lines/guitar strings through it. Add you initials or name above or below the logo.
Launch your PC's image-manipulation program and draw up your logo. Paid-for programs such as Adobe Photoshop and free downloadable software like GIMP can help bring your ideas to life. Experiment by using the "Custom Shapes" tool --- select the shape (arrow/star/circle/square etc.) and click and drag it until it's a good size. Layer other shapes and symbols on top if needed.
Decorate your logo shape by using the various editing tools. Write in the name or initials of your musical outfit by using the "Text" tool and add color to your logo by using "Fill." Experiment by using different color gradients and shading and make your logo more striking by giving the object or symbol a bold black outline.
Save the logo as a JPEG image file once you are satisfied with it. Most promoters will need a copy of your logo to print on their posters so save it to a USB drive or burn it to CD if appropriate.
