Elementary Art Lessons and Activities on the Medieval Times

The medieval times, also called the Middle Ages, refers to the part of history between the fifth century and the 15th century. Castles, knights, armor, chivalry, swords, festivals and feasts filled the lives of many people during this era. Elementary students learning about medieval times can use art lessons and activities to exhibit what they learn about the period.
  1. Draw and Color a Medieval Castle

    • Gather a variety of colored construction paper. Take one sheet of colored construction paper and cut out a shape that resembles a castle. Teach the students the importance of the various castle shapes and what the shapes symbolized. Draw different important features of the castle on the castle cut-out, such as the draw bridge, the trough and the bricks. Color the features of the castle. Pass around the finished castle. Invite the students to make their own castles using the colored construction paper.

    Create a Medieval Maze

    • Draw various mazes on different sheets of colored construction paper. Demonstrate how to make a maze and how to navigate a maze successfully. Teach a lesson on why mazes existed in medieval times. Invite the students to create their own mazes. When the students finish making the mazes, ask them to hand their mazes to other classmates. Once everyone has another person's maze, ask the students to try and solve the mazes.

    Create a Medieval Scroll

    • Teach a lesson on what a scroll is and explain how those who lived during medieval times used the scroll. Demonstrate how to make a scroll using a paper towel tube. Write a message on a piece of colored construction paper. Tape one end of the construction paper to the paper towel tube. Press the tube on the construction paper and slowly roll the tube down the paper until the paper completely wraps around the tube. Invite the students to make their own scrolls.

Write and Perform a Medieval Play

    • Locate a medieval play by searching the library for "Medieval Times Plays." Read the play in front of the students. Instruct the students to create their own plays. Combine the plays into one play and ask the students to perform it in class.
