Drawknives are blades with a handle on both sides. The handles are designed so that your hands are in their strongest position for carving. The blade comes in a range of sizes including 11 1/2 , 9 and 5-1/2 inches long. The blade is bowed so that it slides easier. To operate the drawknife you simply hold the blade to the piece of wood and pull it toward you with the two handles. It strips the wood and can shape it into curves.
There are several other knives that are helpful when woodcarving. A utility knife is compact and easy to carry around. Utility knives can be used to perform a lot of tasks while you're working. They can be used to cut off excess wood and they can be effective when shaping. Marking knives live up to their name and are simply used to mark your place on a piece of wood you're working. Carving knives have small blades and are used to shape the wood.
Handled scrapers are used to flatten and smooth pieces of wood. Kunz No. 80 scraper is designed to reduce strain on your hands. It also reduces the amount of heat that is produced by the friction between the blade and wood. The Kunz scraper can be adjusted to either take full-width shavings or you can set it to where the blade bows so that you can achieve a smoother shave. The blade on the Kunz No. 80 is 2 3/4 inches wide.
If you were to see a cabinet scraper you might mistake it for just a brown sheet of paper. If you look closer though you'll see a scraping tool that can be used to not only smooth out pieces of wood, but also it can also slowly shave away additional layers. Cabinet scrapers can also be used to remove imperfections like glue spots and irregular grain patterns. You just hold cabinet scrapers in your hand and rub the spot that you are trying to strip down.
